07/24/2008: "Black sand, white feet."
Catherine and Gavin walked most days along the black sand that ringed the volcano core or Ureparapara. We would pass villagers walking home from their gardens loaded with trapped bush chickens, yams, beans, casava etc. The beach was fine, clean and beautiful - and if you closed your eyes you would have no idea that is was jet black. Midday was not the time to walk the beach though. Catherine is one of those rare yachtie women that manage to not chip too many toenails and keep nail polish on despite dinghies, rocks, cleats and the thousand other obstacles that our lifestyle attacks out toes with.
