08/08/2007: "Happy Feet in isolation"
Chaotic Harmony is on the move again. We have left the Exploring Isles and are heading north toward Duff Reef. Over the last few days we explored further to the east in the Lau and I had the impression that some of the places we visited were rarely seen. At Sovu Islets we dinghied ashore over crystal water to climb across the island to a beach on the windward side. The island was home to thousands of Boobies and Frigate birds – none of which had any fear of us unless we approached within a metre. It was special to see the chicks and parents up close and personal. At the top of the island there was a cave that looked inhabited by something big. We then heard a loud grunt from the undergrowth and realized that there was probably a feral pig on the island. We kept together and Fletcher said he was ready to launch himself up the nearest coconut tree. The beachcombing was definitely worthwhile as we found valuable items such as old buoys, bird skulls, pink quartz and feathers. Valuable to those of us who have not seen television for six months…
