07/29/2007: "Mother and daughter (not Catherine and Estelle)"
If you really want to wake me up quickly from a deep sound sleep yell ‘Whale’ into my cabin window. It probably has something to do with the fact that I have hit three whales in my sailing life, one of which totally destroyed my catamaran and required a helicopter rescue. That is how I awoke this morning.
Catherine spied the humbacks in the bay that we were anchored at Susui. We came here looking for a special saltwater lagoon in which turtles are meant to be en masse. We have yet to find the turtles but this morning a quick dinghy ride bought us closer to the leviathans than we expected. We drifted as they approached. Fletcher was not impressed, having seen and been read far too many whale attack stories and movies (including Moby dick).
