06/25/2007: "The Passage of Time"
Five years ago, aboard our catamaran Magic Happens, we carefully navigated across an encircling fringing reef to anchor in a shallow lagoon between the Malima Islets. Both then and now we entered because we could not make the Lau Exploring Isles by dusk and did not want to spend the night hove-to in reef passages. These two picturesque islands are uninhabited and rarely visited because of the difficult access (multihulls only) and choppy anchorage at high tide. The beachcombing is fantastic – flotsam and jetsam abounds. This is the sort of place you expect to find an ancient glass Japanese fishing buoy. We did not find one but in 2002 we did find a well sun-bleached monkey soft toy. This time around, five years later, on the same tree the monkey had been replaced by Fletcher – similarly blonde but hopefully not as sun bleached!
