11/14/2006: "Blown away from Vanuatu"
With the now predictable strong headwinds and a 600 mile crossing from Vanuatu to Fiji to do Catherine and I decided to err on the side of caution and comfort and send Catherine and the kids - Estelle, Baden and Fletcher, to Fiji via air. Rather than do the crossing solo I had a friend who was in Fiji on his yacht to fly across and accompany me.
Barry and I left Vanuatu on a howling easterly and we needed to head east. We did not. We went south in the chain as far as Tanna island. Here we awaited anything other than a strong wind warning and any seas less than three metres. We did not wait in vain though as just behind the anchorage at Port Resolution in Mount Yasur. 'The worlds most accessible volcano' and one of the very active ones also. Barry and I climbed to the rim and with heart in hand watched a spectacular display of mother earths fury,
